Canadian Hemlock

(Tsuga canadensis)

This hemlock is a favorite for privacy screens and hedges because of its graceful appearance, soft needles, and ability to be sheared to any height or shape. The tree is also one of only few evergreens that can handle full sun and full shade. If you’re in need of an evergreen landscape tree for a privacy screen the hemlock would be a great solution. Hemlock is not widespread in Minnesota, plant this tree to add something unique to your yard!                                   

Height and width at maturity: 60’ x 30’

Sun or shade: full sun to full shade

Soil conditions: wide range

Moisture tolerance: adaptable to most (excluding standing water)

Fall color: dark green

Climate resilience (ability to withstand changing temperatures and precipitation patterns associated with climate change): moderate

Wildlife value: Hemlock provides shelter and nesting sites for wildlife, and branches and seeds are utilized by animals for food
